Favorite Beach Activities Enjoyed by Celebrities

Celebrities are humans just like us. Every once in a while, celebs need a good dose of fun and relaxation after putting up with a busy and hectic schedule. When they are not filming, making guest appearances, or on worldwide concert tours, celebs tend to escape to the best beaches in the world for a little R&R and maybe a bit of watersport action.

So what exactly are celebs getting up to on the beach and where might you be able to spot them? We have gathered a list of some of the favorite beach activities enjoyed by celebrities and which beaches they frequently escape to. With a bit of luck you may find yourself hanging ten with Matthew McConaughey or jet skiing alongside Kendall Jenner.

Surfing

A  number of celebrities are keen surfers including Liam Hemsworth, Elsa Pataky, Jaden Smith, model Abby Champion, Adam Sandler, Gerard Butler, Cameron Diaz, Emma Stone, and Jason Mraz to name a few. Of course one of the best spots in the world to potentially catch a wave alongside a celebrity is in California due to the fact it’s literally home to Hollywood. Many celebrities own mansions just steps from California’s top surfing spots. Known hotspots where celebrities frequently surf include Manhattan Beach, Malibu, Hollister Ranch, and Mavericks Beach just north of Half Moon Bay. Another great place to catch celebrities is by attending pro surfing competitions.

Cameron Diaz’s surfing skills can be seen in her movie Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle and she frequently travels to Hawaii to catch waves. She was once spotted surfing in Oahu with American pro surfer Kelly Slater and actually broke her nose while surfing off Waikiki Beach. Also friends with Kelly Slater is Matthew McConaughey, who keeps his Airstream trailer parked in a Malibu RV park just steps from great surfing spots. McConaughey had learned to surf for his movie Surfer, Dude.

Paddleboarding

Many celebrities and famous athletes are also taking up stand up paddleboarding (SUP) as a way to stay in shape and retain their killer bodies. A more laid back alternative to surfing, stand up paddleboarding beats doing crunches in the gym and does wonders for your core and balance. Many celebrities have also gone a step further and regularly attend SUP yoga classes. Whether it’s a classic SUP board or an inflatable blow up paddle board, celebrities that have joined the craze include Julia Roberts, Jennifer Aniston, Rihanna, Michelle Rodriguez, Jennifer Garner, and Vincent Cassel.

A great way to spot celebrities paddleboarding is to book SUP lessons out of Malibu. Many local surf shops know where the celebs hang out and lessons are often booked at popular celebrity hangouts like Paradise Cove. Hollywood stars tend to hit the beaches during the week and get out nice and early to beat the crowds.

Jet Skiing

One way to avoid the paparazzi is to hop on a jet ski, and that’s exactly what many celebrities do including Zedd, Andrew Taggart of The Chainsmokers, Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner, Katie Perry, Olivia Munn, Joe Jonas, Britney Spears, Selena Gomez, and Cara Delevingne. So many celebrities love to ride these speedy watercrafts, that it’s quite normal to spot them off popular California beaches as well as celeb hotspots like St. Barts, the Amalfi Coast, and Miami Beach. Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin jumped on board a jet ski together while staying at Mandarin Oriental hotel in Miami.

Wakeboarding

Some celebs like to trade seaside beaches for popular rivers and lakes every once in awhile and have taken a liking to wakeboarding. Celebrity wakeboarders include Andrew Taggart, Justin Bieber, David Beckham, Mark Wahlberg, Justin Timberlake, and John Mayer. Kim Kardashian recently gave wakeboarding a go and documented the experience via one of her Instagram stories. Other celebrities have taken up a variant of wakeboarding called wakesurfing which does away with holding onto the rope which is done in wakeboarding. Watersport novices seem to be able to pick up the sport fairly quickly. Some of the most popular wakeboarding locations for celebrities are Italy’s Lake Como, Lake Havasu, and Lake Tahoe. Although wakeboarding is generally done on lakes and rivers, the sport is sometimes offered in sheltered bays.

Yachting

Not really a beach activity per say, but celebrities can often be spotted off famous beaches in their super yachts. It seems like almost every celebrity enjoys escaping the spotlight and crowds to spend time alone or with their close friends and family on a yacht. Many celebrities either own their own super yachts or charter them in the world’s most luxurious locations.

Frequent yachters include Taylor Swift, Karlie Kloss, Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake, Priyanka Chopra, the Jonas Brothers, Chrissy Teigen and John Legend, and Jennifer Lopez. Just about any celebrity can be found on a yacht at some point in their career. Simply take a look at your favorite celebrity’s Instagram feed and there is sure to be at least one selfie taken on a yacht.

Steven Spielberg once owned the 86-meter yacht named Seven Seas which he later chartered out to other celebs like Leonardo DiCaprio when the filmmaker wished to upgrade to an even bigger yacht. Bono owns the 49-meter super yacht Cyan and Johnny Depp escapes to the sea aboard his 47-meter super yacht Amphitrite. Taylor Swift’s “End Game” music video was shot aboard the 53-meter MIZU yacht in Miami alongside Ed Sheeran and rapper Future. If you happen to have a small fortune burning a hole in your pocket, you can actually charter the MIZU yacht yourself.

So next time you’re in destinations such as French Polynesia, Puerto Vallarta, Ibiza, Amalfi Coast, Saint-Tropez, or the Caribbean, be sure to bring along some high-powered binoculars and spy on the passing yachts to see if you can spot any celebs yourself, unless of course you are rich enough to sail alongside them.

Sunbathing

Of course there are some celebrities that would rather just lounge on the beach and work on their tan. Wanting to soak up the sun is something that all of us can relate to. Choose to relax on the beach sands of rich California neighborhoods and you may find yourself spreading out a towel next to a Hollywood A-lister. A good place to start is Carbon Beach in Malibu. Nicknamed “Billionaire’s Beach”, this stretch of sand was once off limits to the public but ever since 2015 you can now walk among the rich and famous that regularly catch summer rays there. Other great beach destinations to spot celebs are Miami’s South Beach, Sandy Lane Beach in Barbados, Pampelonne Beach in St. Tropez, and Maui’s Wailea Beach.
