Best Places to Stay on Your East Coast Road Trip

Known for its world-class scenery and endless list of iconic road trips, the United States is best explored by car. Of the many routes you can choose to take, the East Coast holds a particular charm, with a combination of historic cities and a rugged coastline.

As with any road trip, you’ll need a couple of destinations to use as bases. The following are the best places to stay as you drive the East Coast of the USA. Each destination has great hotel options and an abundance of affordable rooms.

Daytona Beach

When you begin your road trip in Florida, be sure to stop by Daytona Beach. An hour south of St. Augustine, Daytona is most famous for its spring break crowds, which number close to 200,000 every year. Throughout the rest of the year, Daytona Beach offers the promise of hotels with stunning Atlantic Ocean views, along with water sports like waterskiing, parasailing, and swimming in the warm waters.

In addition, this is one of the last places in the world where you can drive your car on the beach. It’s a thrilling experience and a tradition carried over from the days when motorists would take to the sand to race.

Savannah

A 3.5-hour drive north from Daytona Beach, Savannah should be your next stop. With its charming historic district, enchanting antebellum buildings and hotels, and streets lined with towering oaks draped in Spanish moss, you’ll very quickly fall in love.

Savannah has seen a colorful past, one full of slaves, cotton, pirates, and Civil War. A vibrant and progressive town with plenty of historic sites, it’s easy to see why Savannah is a premiere tourist attraction in the USA.

Myrtle Beach

Just over three hours from Savannah lies Myrtle Beach. As one of the most family-friendly cities along South Carolina’s Atlantic Coast, this is the perfect stop for those looking for affordable beach hotels.

The premiere attraction here is the beach, with 60 miles of coastline and a huge range of activities on the shore. The sand is packed hard enough to ride on, and the water invites snorkelers, swimmers, and scuba divers. There are amusement parks a short distance from the beach, and the region is also known for shopping and golf, with more than 100 courses.

Ocean City

Ocean City is an eight-hour drive from Myrtle Beach, though if this proves too long, you could stop overnight in Nags Head to break up the drive. Ocean City is another affordable beachside escape, though the main attraction here is the boardwalk. Originally built in 1902, it’s now a permanent walkway that runs for 5 miles and is popular for long walks, cycling, and rollerblading.

Ocean City has an amusement park, water parks, golf, watersports, and some great day trip options, including Wallops Island, historic Berlin, plantation tours, charter fishing and cruises, and horseback riding. Ocean City hotels along the boardwalk are affordable year round, with many located on the beach.
